A MAJOR search and rescue operation has been launched amid fears a man has been lost at sea off Weston’s coast.

RNLI, police and coastguard teams are all involved in the search, which was launched after a member of the public raised the alarm around 7am this morning (Thursday).

The 999 call was made after a walker spotted an abandoned wheelchair near the sea wall off Birnbeck Road – at the same spot as a man in his 40s had been seen sitting in the chair late the previous night.

A large-scale sea search is now under way, involving teams from a variety of rescue services, as well as the police helicopter.

Further details to follow.
