COASTGUARDS have stopped searching for a fisherman who went missing from Weston on Thursday.

The search for Alan Wright, aged 26, who was thought to have slipped from Birnbeck Pier, was called off this weekend.

A coastguard spokesman said: "We are not actively searching and will not be doing anything further on this matter unless something is reported to be found. This is now a police matter."

Alan was last seen near the pier on Thursday where he planned to go fishing. He had arranged to be picked up at the same location but did not turn up.

The fisherman has a green Celtic band tattoo on his upper right arm and was wearing black jeans and a long dark coloured jacket. He also had a pair of waist-height, green waders.

Two people witnessed a fisherman being washed into the sea at Birnbeck Island at around 4.35pm on Thursday. This coincided with reports of Alan being missing.

Anyone with information is urged to call Weston police on 0845 456 7000.
