POLICE have arrested a man after bomb fears forced them to cordon off a residential street.

The 36-year-old was arrested this morning after police swooped on an address in Beatty Way, Burnham at 7.45am to execute a warrant under the Explosives Act.

A 100-metre cordon has been established as a precaution while experts investigate the scene.

A bomb disposal unit from Ashchurch in Gloucestershire is currently at the scene, while a total of 17 residents have been evacuated from 50 homes which fall within the cordon.

People are being urged to avoid the area to allow emergency services access.

A police spokesman said: “We will be doing everything we can to minimise disruption to people’s daily lives, but public safety must be our top priority.”

The police have said that at this stage there is no evidence to suggest the incident is related to terrorism.

A press briefing has been called for 3.15pm to provide further information on the investigation.
