Liberal Democrat party memberships in North Somerset have soared in the past weeks as the fallout continues from last month’s EU referendum.

The party – which backed the remain vote – has seen a spike in party membership of more than 20 per cent in North Somerset since voters opted to quit the union two weeks ago.

Group leader at North Somerset Council Mike Bell told the Mercury: “The Conservative and Labour parties are busy fighting each other when they should be looking at a strong future for Britain, so I am not at all surprised that more and more people are giving the LibDems another look.”

The party has received 10,000 new membership applications nationwide since the referendum.
