AN INJURED 73-year-old woman lay wet in the street for over an hour waiting for an ambulance to arrive.Marianne Fitch, pictured right, fell while crossing the road outside her house in Ebdon Road, Worle, on Tuesday morning, breaking two bones.Despite four calls for an ambulance, the great-grandmother lay on a wet pavement shivering and in pain for 1hr 25mins before help arrived.Husband of 51 years, Brian Fitch, said: "My wife was crossing the road after visiting a neighbour."She suffers from rheumatoid arthritis and brittle bones and if someone in her position stumbles, they can't regain their balance. I saw it happen and was out there in a flash."With her leg and arm broken I couldn't move her, so our neighbours rallied round with umbrellas, waterproofs and blankets to keep her warm."It was pouring with rain, we were both getting pretty cold and wet and my wife was obviously in pain."The first ambulance call was made within five minutes. We got more and more annoyed as four people had called an ambulance and no action seemed to be taking place."I overheard one neighbour telling them we had been waiting in the rain for over an hour and asking what they were going to do about it. They said they would get there when they could. "Eventually an ambulance did turn up. I kept my cool, but explained I was far from happy and asked where the b****y h**l had they been. They said they had got there as quickly as they could."It's annoying to think that with all the money being spent on the NHS, there's not enough ambulances to cover Weston and the surrounding area."I'm disgusted with the ambulance service. Someone has commented that the AA would have arrived quicker."An Avon Ambulance Service spokesman said: "We are concerned to hear of this incident. However, it is difficult to comment through the media, as we have to observe strict patient confidentiality. "We have an extremely rigorous complaints procedure and if the individual contacts us, we will launch a full investigation and directly report in detail our findings to them."Mrs Fitch is due to have surgery today (Fri). Mr Fitch has cancelled a trip to Ireland where the couple were due to celebrate a son's 50th birthday.
