A BUILDER from Weston's Bournville estate faces life behind bars after a jury found him guilty of repeatedly raping two girls over a 20-year period.Christopher Martin, of Holms Road, was found guilty of 25 charges of rape, six counts of buggery, eight counts of indecency with a child under the age of 14 and three counts of anal rape.A jury came to a unanimous guilty verdict after a seven-day trial at Bristol Crown Court.Martin raped the girls throughout their childhood between 1981 and 2005, one for 12 years and one for 14 years, until the girls worked up the courage to tell the police. The Crown Prosecution Service told of how he would rape the girls in his home while his wife was at work and even drive them to the beach on the pretence of walking his dog so he could rape them in his car.The 53-year-old wore a cream jumper over a blue shirt as the verdicts were returned on Tuesday (April 24). He will be sentenced on June 4 and is likely to face life imprisonment. Both complainants said they were first raped when they were in primary school and were frequently abused throughout their childhood into their later years.Noel Sweeney, defending Martin, tried to convince the jury in his closing speech that the prosecution's case contained no proof and was 'just words'.However, while in the witness box, Martin said he had had sex with the girls when they were 15. But he said he had sex three times with each, twice in his home and once in his car. He said the girls were lying and had conspired against him through a serious of secret meetings before going to the police with a make-believe story.Robert Davies, prosecuting, said in his closing speech: "The person is not capable or willing to face up to the truth is Christopher Martin."He has a different version of events and the reason it is so different is because it is untrue."Why would two nice people want to go to the police with underwear in plastic bags in one hand and a head full of invention for the police to swallow with no reason?"The reason they have done it is because it is true.
