A coastguard crew was called to reports of people in difficulty on Brean Down last night (Thursday).

Burnham-on-Sea Coastguard Rescue Team received a call from a member of the public who reported seeing torch lights on the south side of the Down at around 8.56pm.

But when the crew arrived the walkers were already making their own way back to safety.

A coastguard spokesman said: “Once we arrived at their location the first informant pointed out where the lights were.

“By then they had made their way up to the top of the Down and were walking along the top.

“This is a popular site for climbers and they can often be spotted at all times of the day.

“They knew the area and the access path near the top, all were well equipped, happy and in no danger.

“The first informant did the right thing in calling – from their position it is easy to think someone is in difficulty.

“As always it is better to be safe than sorry and we are happy to attend to ensure everything is OK.”
