A Somerset football club has set up a fundraising page following a spate of burglaries.

In the space of seven weeks, Burnham United AFC had its clubhouse, in Cassis Close, raided three times.

The club is aiming to raise £2,000 for security gates, door shutters, CCTV and fencing around the building.

Within 24 hours of launching the CrowdFunder page, £855 was raised after the Seasiders promoted their campaign on social media.

A spokesman for the club said: “These incidents have caused much distress affecting all our users and the small group of volunteers who spend countless hours running and maintaining our club.

“This club has been a part of our town for 90 years and we wish to ensure it remains so for many years to come.”

Anyone who contributes £20 will have their name listed on the clubhouse’s donation plaque whereas a £200 donation will pay for a two-year pitch side advertising banner.
