FOLLOWING a report which showed schools were not giving career guidance effectively, Somerset Chamber of Commerce is offering to help.
Education watchdog Ofsted reported this month how three-quarters of schools they visited had a lack of engagement with employers and many did not have the skills and expertise to provide comprehensive advice to students.
Rupert Cox, chief executive of the chamber, was interviewed by inspectors as part of the national investigation into careers advice.
He said: “The Somerset Chamber is disappointed but not surprised by the Ofsted findings into the quality of careers advice for our young people.
“We have been saying for some time, and reported to the Ofsted inspectors, that schools should make better use of the business community to help inspire young people to study hard, listen and learn, and make the most of the career opportunities in their locality.
“Chamber members are keen to help out because it is their interest to have well prepared young people ready for the world of work.”
Somerset schools can make contact with the chamber who can offer advice and guidance through a network of business people who will volunteer their time and knowledge.
