A WESTON man is starring in a BBC documentary after being nominated for an award in the ‘Oscars’ of the mobile phone industry.

Callum Higson, aged 23, works at Phone House in Worle, and has been chosen to take part in the new documentary.

The show will go behind the scenes of Shop Idol 2015 – one of the most prestigious awards in the telecommunications industry.

Callum (pictured) has made it to the final and has been nominated in the customer service salesman of the year category.

He said: “The BBC has been down filming quite a lot because I’m in the grand final of the competition.

“It’s quite strange at first, you have to watch what you say.

“But it’s been great, and as a small local business it’s great.

“This is the Oscars of the mobile phone game.

“Every company puts their best person forward, so it’s me against the big boys.

“We were quite chuffed when we found out because we are only a small local store.”

Callum will be up against employees from other big mobile phone companies but believes his ability to think local gives him the edge.

He said: “As a local business customers are a gift and reputation is everything.

“They look at what you do for the local community.

“In Worle we have Hope Church, so we have put one of its charity boxes in the shop and I have been out there to do a session with the elderly to teach people how to use their phones.

“Some people might be lonely and a lot of them are not aware of what they can do.

“I’ve taught them to Skype and to video chat with their grandchildren in Australia.”

The documentary will be broadcast this summer and is due to be aired in six parts.
