DOZENS of new small businesses are springing up following an upturn in fortunes in Weston, a regional enterprise group claims.

North Somerset Enterprise Agency says confidence is high after a positive last quarter of 2009 in Weston, with 31 new firms starting up.

Among the new businesses were an interior design firm, taxi service and bridal wear shop.

Chief executive Angela Hicks said: "We are proud to report continued success among start-up and small businesses in North Somerset.

"An interesting trend emerging is that we are seeing some very confident entrepreneurs starting new businesses.

"These are people who are putting their skills, knowledge and redundancy packages to good use, seeking good advice at the outset and giving their new enterprises a strong chance of survival."

The agency is a non-profit agency which offers free, impartial and confidential advice and information.
