WARNINGS on the pressures from cold call salesmen have been served to Weston residents, alerting people tothe techniques of security system sellers.
A number of people have been approached by telephone and enticed by false claims that the security systems are directly linked to the local fire station or are installed by the police.
North Somerset Council’s trading standards has now issued the warning, telling residents some traders have been known to stay at someone’s home for more than two hours, refusing to give up without a sale while working entirely on commission.
Cllr Peter Bryant, executive member with responsibility for consumer protection, said these sellers often pray on people’s fears to push through sales.
He said: “No-one should ever be made to feel uncomfortable in their own home by a sales person.
“Unfortunately that is exactly what happens in these cases and many people find it almost impossible to say no.
“They are often left with poor products and on going costs as well as a significant hole in the pocket. It must be stopped.”
Anyone who has been approached by a trader in this way is asked to report the matter to trading standards on 08454 040506.
‘No cold calling’ stickers, to deter cold callers, are also available from Weston’s library in Walliscote Grove Road.
