THE brand new £1million Churchill Sports Centre will be used for the first time today (Mon) after building work was completed.
Pupils from Churchill Academy, who are on the same site, will this afternoon get to use the new £300,000 artificial pitch as the contractors hand the keys over to North Somerset Council. Leisure management company, Tone, will run the centre on behalf of the council.
A new gym, studio and set of changing rooms have been in addition to the artificial pitch. The reception area and lighting for the swimming pool have also been upgraded.
Cllr Felicity Baker, the council’s executive member for leisure facilities, said the partnership allowed for projects to go ahead even when budgets are being slashed.
She said: “Churchill Sports Centre is a classic example of what can be achieved at a time of massive cuts in public spending.”
The sports centre with all its new facilities will be fully open to the public from Saturday.
