The return of Five Gold Rings this week unearthed a heart-warming story when the winner of the £500 prize donated it to a Weston-based charity.

The Mercury has teamed up with Weston Business Improvement District (BID) and high-quality jeweller Caboodle to give away five rings worth up to £500 in time for Christmas.

After another busy night of shopping in the town centre, Justine O’Reilly, of West Wick, was the lucky winner whose name was drawn from a jam-packed box of entries.

Police officer Justine – who had just embarked on a patrol around the town when her phone rang – had to hot-foot it back into the town centre in 10 minutes to claim her prize.

But Justine, aged 46, decided those who are less fortune would be better placed to benefit from this pre-Christmas treat.

On Friday, she informed the BID she would like to donate the voucher to Weston Hospicecare.

She said: “I got home on Thursday and I decided I wanted to do something nice at this time of year and Weston Hospicecare is a great cause.”

Community fundraiser at Weston Hospicecare, Sue Harding, said: “We’d like to thank Justine for her thoughtfulness and generosity.

“As a local charity, we are very much reliant on the support of our community, and it’s extremely kind of Justine to give us this lovely gift just before Christmas.”

Paul Batts, chairman of the BID, said it was ‘another brilliant evening’ and he was pleased to see so many people in the town centre.

He said: “The box was absolutely brimming with entries and it’s nice to see another great winner.”

Caboodle owner Steve Finch added: “It’s another fantastic week and another worthy winner.

“This shows as long as your in town on a Thursday night, anybody can win it which is wonderful.”

There are still three more chances for you to get your hands on the perfect present in time for Christmas. Another lucky winner will be walking away with a Caboodle voucher worth a cool £500 at tonight’s late-night shopping event.

All you need to do is post your completed competition form from this page in the box on the Mercury stand in High Street, near to Big Lamp Corner, and hope your number is the one we dial.

If your name is drawn, we will give you a call. You must answer within five rings and, crucially, you must still be in the town centre to claim the prize.

With three prizes still up for grabs, there is still time to make it the perfect Christmas.
