A VILLAGE pub will be taken over by Heartstone Inns as its owner of more than 20 years prepares to leave it behind.

The Woodborough Inn in Winscombe has been run by Philip Smith for two decades, but it is now set to be taken on by privately-owned pub company Heartstone Inns, bringing its total portfolio to 11 pubs.

Mr Smith said: “After 20 years of owning and operating Woodborough Inn, I am relishing a more relaxing lifestyle and to be able to walk to the pub and enjoy it as a customer without all the operational stresses and strains.”

Managing director of Heartstone Inns James Birch said: “We are delighted with this acquisition. Woodborough Inn fits perfectly within our current estate and reinforces our commitment to building a group of quality, freehold food-led pubs in the South and South West that offer opportunity for development and growth.”

The pub was sold for an undisclosed sum but was marketed by Christie + Co for £950,000.
