PLANS to build 120 holiday lodges on the outskirts of Weston have been put on hold, despite councillors saying it will ‘have a good impact’ on the town.

Puxton Park’s owners have applied to North Somerset Council for permission to change an agricultural field to a holiday lodge caravan park.

The owners hope to build wooden cabins, to provide overnight accommodation for guests.

The application has prompted a number of objections and as many supporters – with some saying it will cause too much traffic, while others say it will provide a welcome boost to tourism.

At the council’s most recent planning and regulatory committee meeting, Cllr Ann Harley said she was worried about the increased traffic and flood risk, and added: “I can’t see it is going to encourage tourism into the centre of Weston, there is no kind of business plan.

“The lodges could potentially be occupied by holidaymakers 365 days a year. It is reasonable to expect they will use the balconies and noise and light pollution will take place as barbecues and parties are likely to take place.”

But some councillors suggested the development was needed.

Cllr Tom Leimdorfer said: “I have sympathy with scepticism, but this application has come a long way and if we are serious about encouraging tourism we do need this as there is a shortage of high quality self-catering cottages.”

Cllr Leimdorfer went on to say people staying in the lodges would travel to Weston and boost the town’s economy.

Cllr Mark Canniford said: “There is no doubt it will have a good impact on Weston. North Somerset might not want it but it will be good for Weston, it is just what Weston needs.”

The committee voted to refuse the application, but because the council’s planning officer had recommended it be approved it will be reconsidered at the next planning meeting.
