A WESTON motorcycle business has closed its doors after serving customers for 67 years.

Chris Latty, joint owner of Wyverns Motorcycles in Locking Road, has retired and the premises is now for sale.

He said: “My family have enjoyed serving the local community over the last 67 years and I am proud that our company became synonymous with giving a friendly and efficient service.

“Wyverns has always been a family business as my brother and I took over the reins in the 1970s.”

Wyverns Motorcycles was opened by Don Latty and Alan McLachlan in 1953 after moving from a smaller premises in Drove Road.

The former chapel was converted to a motorcycle showroom, and in 1955, the bakery was bought as the business expanded.

Other Wyvern branches also opened in Bath and Bridgwater.

Mr Latty said: “An accolade of Honda Dealer Of The Year was granted in recognition of the service and sales we had achieved.

“Family tragedy struck however as my only brother, Malcolm Latty died in 1982, himself an outstanding motorcycle trials rider participating in local and national events.”

In 1991, Mr Latty went into partnership with Terry Morris but both are now retiring.

Mr Latty added: “Wyverns has served the community of Weston for over 65 years, an achievement very few businesses in Weston have ever accomplished.”
