DIGGERS have been spotted at Weston-super-Mare’s Dolphin Square – with developer McLaren Life saying ‘major’ construction work will begin on the site in January.

The Mercury reported last month that long-awaited work on the site’s £18million leisure phase was set to begin and building crews are now preparing the site for ground work in the New Year.

It is estimated the Carlton Street site will be open to the public in 2017 and building contractor Dawnus Construction is expected to complete its work by spring 2017, when operators will move on-site to fit their units ahead of a summer opening.

A McLaren Life spokesman said: “The diggers are just doing the ground work and preparing the site for major action, which will start in January.”

Some of the names which have signed up to the site’s leisure phase include Cineworld and restaurant chains Nando’s, Pizza Express, Prezzo, Mimosa and Preto, while a ‘health and fitness’ operator will also be included in the scheme.
