A WESTON security guard has turned entrepreneur after starting his own company to improve in-car security for children.

Kevin Phelps came up with the idea for Bucklesafe! two-and-a-half years ago when the seat belt securing his baby's car seat in place repeatedly came undone.

He created his own prototype and completed a three-day starting in business course with North Somerset Enterprise Agency before teaming up with Ian Berg Plastics Ltd in Melksham who now manufacture his Bucklesafe! system.

The product prevents the accidental or deliberate release of safety belt buckles by fitting over the seat buckle and covering the red release button so that wandering fingers are unable to get inside.

Kevin spent eight years in the army and now works as a security guard at the Sovereign Shopping Centre in the High Street.

Kevin said: "It's certainly challenging starting up a new business, particularly during a recession but a good idea is a good idea whatever the economic climate.

"Whilst I'm getting things off the ground I'm continuing my job as a security guard, so I'm working hard to fit everything in.

"Part of my holiday this year will be spent at The Baby Show at the NEC in Birmingham where I'll be telling more people about the product and the website.

"I am passionate about Bucklesafe! and I'm confident it is going to be a big success once the word really gets out.

"I've spoken to so many parents who have had similar experiences with children's car seats and are keen to improve their safety.

"This is a common problem and I believe my product is the perfect solution.
