Sainsbury's has permission to build in Cheddar

SEDGEMOOR District Council have given planning permission for a new Sainsbury’s to be built in Cheddar after voting seven to five for the new store.

The Development Control Committee gave the store permission to build at Steart Farm in Wedmore Road following a two-and-a-half hour meeting.

This is subject to Sainsbury’s providing subsidised free parking in the village centre for three to five years.

The store must also prepare a village centre improvement plan, which includes providing grants to improve shopfronts and producing maps to Cheddar facilities.

Both Cheddar Parish Council and neighbouring Axbridge Town Council objected to the plans.

The application received 596 letters of objection, and a petition, but also received 207 letters of support.

Sainsbury’s say the store will provide up to 100 full and part time job opportunities.

There is an outstanding application for a Tesco on the football club site still in the consultation period.
