A NEWSAGENT from Uphill has been declared the independent community retailer of the year.

Beverley Lister, who runs Uphill News in Old Church Road, was recognised for her contribution to the community.

She received an award at a glittering ceremony at the Park Plaza Riverbank Hotel organised by the National Federation of Retail Newsagents.

Since taking over the shop in 2006, Beverley has transformed it into a thriving, community-focused business.

With the emphasis on customer service, Uphill News provides a home news delivery service as well as delivering shopping to elderly and disabled customers free of charge.

Beverley, aged 41, said: “I’m ecstatic. It’s nice to have our little shop put on the map and to be recognised for what we have been doing.

“I couldn’t do this without my brilliant team of
people, aged from 13-75. They are marvellous.”

Beverley regularly supports local causes through
collections and donations as well as supplying raffle prizes to local events.

The shop is celebrating its 80th anniversary this year with a Christmas fair and the launch of its new Random Act of Kindness Awards which will be presented to people who are heavily involved in village life and community groups.

The event takes place in the Victory Hall from 10am-4pm on November 13.
