A WESTON nightclub is to be completely transformed – into a new home for many of the traders at the Dolphin Square indoor market.

A deal has been struck this week for one family of traders to take over La Costa in Princess Royal Square and use it as a new marketplace.

Traders were set to become homeless when the lease on the long-running market ends on September 21 as work continues on the 45million McLaren Life development.

But the deal, between traders and newlyweds Sarah and Scott Schranz and La Costa owners Louis and Andrew Macrides, means the market will remain a strong presence in the town.

Before the rescue deal was agreed, the new development, which will have a bowling alley, cinema, hotel, restaurants and shops, had threatened to bring down the curtain on a 42-year association between the town and its popular indoor market.

But Mr and Mrs Schranz have now agreed to let the La Costa site, which they will take over on September 5.

They and other market stall holders are then due to move across to the premises, which could be called The Marketplace, later in September.

Mrs Schranz, whose family have been market stall holders in the town for 25 years, said: “We are not going to just move the indoor market across to the new site – this is a completely new project.

“We are well-established at Dolphin Square, and when no alternative came up for us to move to we took it upon ourselves to try to relocate some of the traders who wanted to move to a new site.

“It should have most of the stalls that are currently in the market – records and CDs, clothing, hardware and toys and gifts, hopefully a caf, pet shops, sweets and floor concessions.”

Louis Macrides said: “We’re very happy, Weston people would have been very sad to see the indoor market go forever.

“We think the family taking it over are lovely and we think they have saved the market because otherwise the market holders would have been homeless.

“One less nightclub will not do Weston any harm. We think the new market will be a great addition to the town’s seafront.”
