Worle is set to be left with only one bank after Barclays announced it will close its branch, angering customers.

The banking giant has announced it will close its outpost in High Street on March 9, 2018 amid declining use.

Richard Stockland, community banking director for Somerset, said: “At Barclays Worle branch, customer usage has continued to decline and additionally 79 per cent of our branch customers are also

using other ways to do their banking such as online and by telephone.

“On average more than half (59 per cent) of our customers now regularly use alternative branches and this figure is even higher for our business customers, which is why we have taken the difficult decision to close the branch.”

Worle will be left with only Lloyds Bank and Post Office services when Barclays closes.

Many people took to social media to share their view.

Mike Skidmore commented: “Just been down to Barclays in Worle High Street to do the banking and it’s queued out of the door.

“It’s shocking that the banks are pulling out of all the local communities. Is that good customer service?”

Suzanne Boyle wrote: “Barclays in Worle is always busy. There are a lot of people who don’t want to use online banking – I for one wouldn’t. What about people who don’t have WiFi?

“That’s the trouble with society today, these big corporations seem to think we are all computer literate. Well hello, big surprise we aren’t. Makes me so mad that they never think of us mere mortals.”

Andreas Macrides said: “A lot elderly people use that bank. It’s Barclays trying to increase profits by reducing services, almost like the NHS.”

Sue Phillips Roper commented: “The art of conversation will become a rarity.

“There are times when you wish to talk face-to-face, not online chat. The world is becoming a very insular place, and very lonely.”

Leslie Beavan said: “It’s going the same as retail. If there’s a larger branch in a city or town near the smaller branch they will close the one to make more footfall and keep the large store open.”
