Westonians have pledged their support to the town’s independent businesses after a sign was installed to attract more customers.

An arch has been installed above Meadow Street in a bid to coax more customers to Orchard Meadows, home to Weston’s ‘interesting’ independent traders.

Paul Batts, chairman of Weston Business Improvement District which paid for the sign with Weston Town Council, believes it will lure more shoppers to Orchard Meadows.

He said: “As people walk across Big Lamp Corner, people will see Orchard Meadows is defined as a shopping area, rather than a street which heads out of town.

“Orchard Meadows deserves its recognition as an independent area which is much more interesting than the usual players on the High Street.

“It’s really important Orchard Meadows is a brand and a destination for shoppers. Every week we’re hearing high street companies are struggling, so independent areas like Grove Village and Orchard Meadows are going to be important areas.”

Many people took to social media to share their view.

Sue Hunt said: “Meadow Street is brilliant and the arch looks cool. Hopefully help to increase footfall.”

Cheryl Hodges wrote: “The town needs a good tidy up and removal of the unsavoury characters and I don’t think a metal sign is going to help.”

Charlotte Taylor commented: “Love the sign and there are some nice independent shops there, however I didn’t find it particularly ‘interesting’ walking past individuals clearly off their face and having to explain to my children ‘that’s why you don’t do drugs’.”

George Latham said: “A step in the right direction and nice to see things getting done to help improve the area.

“Now it’s time to keep the momentum going as there are many great shops and businesses down that way from computers and clothes to toys and photography.”

Kelly Garvey wrote: “I like the sign, but there agree too many empty shops there to attract people.

“I hope more shops and cafés open there in the near future it’s a nice original part of Weston town centre.”
