No progress has been made to secure retailers to fill Weston’s vacant TJ Hughes building, two months after plans to bring the building back in to use were approved.

Dove Properties has planning permission to convert the former department store, in St James Street, into three shops and 19 flats on the floors above.

However, the developer has not yet had any luck in finding tenants.

Tim Warrell, of Dove Properties, told the Mercury: “Unfortunately there is no update on retailers.

“August has been a bit of a dead month.

“We are in the process of reviewing our options with our agents.”

The building was at the centre of a social media storm last week amid rumours it could become a nightclub, but these were swiftly quashed by Mr Warrell.

He said: “I have absolutely no knowledge of the rumours. There are no plans for the building to be used as a nightclub, and we’ve had no discussions.”
