Tesco will be able to start fining people who stay in its Weston-super-Mare car park for more than 30 minutes without spending £5.
North Somerset Council officers have agreed the supermarket, in Station Road, can install a machine to validate parking tickets, as well as a camera which can read registration numbers.
The store is introducing new rules which will mean people will be fined £70 if they stay for longer than two hours.
Anyone parking for longer than half an hour will need to spend £5 in store.
A Tesco spokesman said the new system was ‘designed to protect those growing increasingly frustrated by the misuse of spaces by motorists who aren’t using the store’.
