A Weston College project to gain 100 apprenticeship pledges from businesses in 100 days has reached its target 75 days early, earning praise from the town’s MP.

Last month the college set about trying to secure 100 agreements from businesses in Weston-super-Mare and North Somerset for its students to take on apprenticeship roles.

And just 25 days later, 115 pledges from 49 companies have been made.

The project was supported by Weston MP John Penrose, who said: “Not only do students end up with the important skills and knowledge they need to enter the competitive jobs market, but businesses gain access to a pool of students who bring a positive attitude and work ethic to the table.”

The college’s apprenticeships team expects the number to continue to rise over the next few weeks.

Tom Holdich, lead sales co-ordinator at the college, said: “We have been overwhelmed by the response from employers, however we don’t want people to think that now we’ve met our target that we will be resting on our laurels. The campaign will keep running with the aim to get as many pledges as possible.”

Dr Paul Phillips, principal and chief executive of the college said: “We thought that this target would be challenging, but I am thrilled by the support of businesses.

“This campaign has enabled the college to make new relationships with employers and I hope the success continues.”
