Weston-super-Mare Jobs Fair returns next week and MP John Penrose believes it will ‘help oil the wheels of the town’s economic rebirth’.

More than 60 firms will pack into the Winter Gardens on Wednesday from 10.30am-2pm, offering a range of opportunities.

The careers showcase is orchestrated by Mr Penrose and his team, and the Mercury held a question and answer session with Weston’s Conservative MP to learn more.

Question: What have you learned from previous jobs fairs which will be implemented at this event?

Mr Penrose: “Bigger is better. Jobseekers like a wide range of employers from lots of sectors, because it gives them the best chance of finding that perfect fit. And local firms like to see plenty of jobseekers because it improves their hit rate too.”

Are you pleased with the list of employers you have been able to attract to the jobs fair?

“Absolutely. It looks like we’ll equal or beat the record, with about 60 firms from industries like construction, care, the military, catering and leisure.”

What advice would you give to people attending the fair?

“Don’t be afraid to talk to anyone – they will be happy to tell you all about the jobs they’ve got available – and bring a CV with you to get the ball rolling too.”

Is unemployment a problem in Weston?

“Unemployment in Weston is well below the national average, but there are always new jobs and people looking for a change so the jobs fair is a way to oil the wheels of Weston’s economic rebirth by helping to match up firms and jobseekers quickly.”

Are there any industries growing well in Weston and what are they looking for in future employees?

“Everything is growing pretty well, so there should be opportunities everywhere, but some of the brightest stars at the moment are in food, with things like Thatchers, Eat: Weston and the South West FoodWorks project all making a mark.

“Then there’s an ever-growing set of digital companies, plus oodles of jobs at Hinkley too.

“They’re all looking for the same things: an enthusiastic work ethic and either relevant skills or a willingness to learn them fast.”
