Social media users have called for Primark to come to Weston after B&M announced it will open a long-empty High Street building.

The bargain store, which already has a branch in Marchfields Way, will take on the former BHS unit – which has been vacant for nearly two years since the department store chain went bust.

B&M will take on the lion’s share of the unit, with Specsavers moving into a smaller section last year.

A spokesman said: “We are pleased to announce we are going to be opening a new store in part of the former BHS (store).

“We are feeling really positive about the creation of new jobs for local people and hope customers are going to be delighted with their new store.”

Many people took to social media to share their view.

Lee Swire commented: “When are we going to get a decent retailer instead of the cheap shops we already have? Bristol is still the place to go for shopping if you want to buy anything worthwhile.”

Amy Leech said: “I don’t understand why we don’t have a Primark. Yes the old BHS unit would have been a bit too small, but TJ Hughes has been empty for years. It’s ridiculous.

“It would bring a lot more people to the town instead of them going elsewhere.”

Faye Marie Denham wrote: “What’s the point in having two shops in Weston when were crying out for shops like Primark? It’s a waste of time if you ask me.”

Leslie Beavan said: “Anything is better than the eyesore it is now. No major retailer will come to Weston when we have a city like Bristol on our doorstep.

“We had stores such as Topshop, a standalone Burtons, Clarks, but through lack of trade all are now gone.”

Maureen Bowen commented: “Primark must have its head in the sand. With the amount of young families and teenagers we have in Weston, who only want one-season clothes, they would wear the floor out finding their next must-have outfit.”

Mark Cobbold said: “Primark has openly stated it doesn’t want to come to Weston.

“You might as well campaign to take the roof off and turn it into an outdoor pool.”
