Worle Village Butchers is selling meat sourced from around the West Country from its new location in High Street.

Manager Mike Vowles said the traditional stores, including butchers, bakers and fruit and vegetable shops, are starting to make a return after years of tough competition with supermarkets.

He said: “Supermarkets made it difficult when they started drilling prices down.

“Now they are actually more expensive than a butchers, so the shops are starting to come back.

“The High Street in Worle needed it, as it is full of charity shops and estate agents.

“There is a great greengrocer and a bakery. Now people can come to the High Street and get what they would usually buy from the supermarket.”

Many people are now more aware about where their food is coming from, and it can be difficult to find locally-sourced meat in supermarkets.

Mr Vowles said the butchers meat is all from the West Country, and better quality than can be bought from supermarkets.

There are plans, too, for the butchers to specialise in selling dried meats and unusual cuts of beef.

Mr Vowles said: “We are having two dry-aged cabinets coming in the next two weeks.

“They will have salt in them, which is a better way of processing dried meats and aged beef.

“We are trying to specialise in that, but also doing quite a few American cuts.

“It is still West Country meat, but brisket and barbecue cuts.”

The butchers is also looking to provide packs where people can order a box of chosen meats, and may also provide a delivery service in the future.

While many aspects of the store are traditional, the interior has been given a modern look, with a cladded wood wall and pictures on display.

The staff are also wearing denim aprons.

Mr Vowles, who comes from a family of butchers, including his uncle and dad, said: “It is a traditional butchers, but modern.”

An open day will be held on Saturday, where there will be money-off deals, samples and people can enjoy cider and ale.
