The Mercury’s Five Gold Rings competition began in spectacular fashion this week, with a ‘lovely’ Worle couple walking away with the coveted jewellery voucher worth £500, and you could be the next person to win.

The Mercury has teamed up with Weston Business Improvement District and high-quality independent jeweller Caboodle to give away five gold rings between now and Christmas.

Bitter conditions did not deter Weston’s shoppers from heading out in their droves for the late-night shopping extravaganza in the town centre on Thursday, and though the fireworks display had to be postponed due to fog, the competition certainly started with a bang.

Hundreds of entrants were eagerly looking at their phones, hoping theirs would be the one to ring.

After the first person out of the hat did not answer in time, a re-draw meant Worle couple Mike and Zena Vaughan, of Verbena Way, were the lucky ones walking away with the perfect Christmas gift.

The couple, who have been married for 43 years, are planning on buying a replacement wedding ring for Zena.

Mike, aged 66, said: “As I was walking on the High Street, I saw my phone started ringing.

“It’s a real surprise and Caboodle is a lovely place, it looks brilliant.

“My wife’s wedding ring is a bit small now and she’s been looking for another one. It’s excellent news.”

Zena, aged 64, added: “Hopefully I will get a ring but you never know; he might treat himself.

“We’ve had a really nice evening shopping in the Sovereign Shopping Centre.”

Town centre manager Steve Townsend said the first night of the competition ‘went really well’.

He added: “We had a really good turnout on a cold night but we had entries beyond what we expected.

“We have an absolutely beautiful couple walking away with the prize, and hopefully Mrs Vaughan will be getting a lovely replacement wedding ring to celebrate their 43 years of marriage.

Caboodle owner Steve Finch commented: “I’m delighted the prize has gone to a lovely couple who are going to buy a ring.

“It couldn’t have been a nicer start to the competition.”

It is not too late if you want to win a cracking Christmas present; there are still four gold rings up for grabs.

To get your hands on one, all you have to do is visit one of the late-night shopping events each Thursday until Christmas in Weston town centre, and fill out the competition slip in that week’s Mercury.

The draw will take place just after 8pm and if you are the lucky person whose name is drawn you must still be in the town centre and, crucially, you must answer within five rings to claim the prize.

The winner will be presented with a voucher and have their picture featured in the next edition of the Mercury.

Do not miss this chance to win the perfect present for a loved one.
