Plans for an Aldi in Highbridge have faced criticism from councillors and businesses, citing concerns about the impact it may have on local traders.

The proposed new store will be on the Isleport industrial estate on the outskirts of town.

But since the plans have been announced more than 60 businesses have signed a petition against the development, with town councillors echoing the businesses’ concerns.

Councillor Peter Burridge-Clayton alluded to the fact that the store may actually be hard for some people to access due to its location.

He said: “We must listen to these concerns. I am concerned that an Aldi store at Isleport is not accessible to many people without a car.

“It is out of town and they haven’t demonstrated a need for a new store there.”

An Aldi spokesman said: “We consulted local people before submitting a planning application and the responses highlighted that the vast majority of the local community are delighted to have an Aldi opening near them.”
