THIEVES have left a sailing club in Burnham with several thousand pounds to pay, after stealing a power cable.

The cable, which supplied mooring pontoons at Burnham Motor Boat and Sailing Club, was taken overnight on June 10-11, and could cost the club around £5,000 to replace.

Graham Wills, the club’s treasurer, said the theft had left members with a ‘sinking feeling’, although its insurance company has agreed to pay the cost of reinstalling the cables.

He said: “It’s a big nuisance really, we’re looking at anywhere between £3,500 and £5,000 to replace.

“It’s very disappointing to see something like this stolen, as it’s set back our plans to build a new pontoon access bridge to replace our current structure.

“The thieves will only get a couple of hundred pounds for it, but it’s set us back thousands.”
