A FORMAL request for CCTV cameras in Mead Vale is to be submitted to North Somerset Council. The move comes after residents pleaded with Weston Town Council to remove a bus stop in Swan Lane which, they say, has become a magnet for troublemakers. Tracey Widlake and Penny Johnstone told town councillors that youths have been smashing up the bus stop and fences have also been set on fire. Police Community Support Officer Matthew Channon, whose beat includes Mead Vale, confirmed youths had been using the bus shelter as a place to congregate and it has 'in turn' become the subject of vandalism. South Worle councillor Chris Howell said: "Residents are fed up with their lives being blighted by an antisocial minority. New CCTV cameras installed recently in Worle High Street have helped to make the area safer. We need the same action in Mead Vale."At present there are no cameras in the area but Cllr Howell says one located by the shopping precinct could provide cover for a wide area around The Nightjar pub.He added: "I've spoken to police and to CCTV chiefs and they would support the idea.
