Call for more dog bins

A FED up pet lover is calling on environmental chiefs to install more dog bins on Portishead's coastal path.Dinkie Sortwell, of Chesle Way, walks her white Alsatian puppy Max along the coast path each day and was horrified to see bags full of dog's mess scattered around the beauty spot.Dinkie said: "It's not that the dog owners aren't being responsible, it is just that there are not enough bins up there."People are clearing up after themselves and using bags, but it seems as if there is no where to put them."This results on them being left on the grass or thrown in the bushes and hedgerows."This problem could be easily solved if the council provided more dog bins along this path, which is used by hundreds of dog walkers each week, and emptied the bins more regularly."Mrs Sortwell, a nursing assistant, said she was also concerned that the area was becoming unkempt and had noticed the small bridge over the stream had been broken.A bench by the sailing club has also mysteriously disappeared.Mrs Sortwell added: "Part of the railing on the bridge has been ripped off."This is very dangerous as if an older person or a child were to trip or fall they could eventually end up in the stream."The bench was also used by a lot of walkers as a place to catch their breath and I am concerned what has happened to it."It is understood young people in the town walk down to the beach by The Windmill pub for late night parties.Cans and bottles have been found on the beach along with the remains of campfires.North Somerset Council spokesman said: "We have removed the bench by the sailing club."It was on a steel frame and had fallen into disrepair and been vandalised."We are looking at the possibility of replacing it if funds allow."We have 31 dog bins in open spaces in Portishead."The council has tried to provide as many as possible but does have limited resources.
