A CONCERNED mum is calling for more life buoys at the town's marina and docks development.Sarah Souter has written to North Somerset Council, town councillors and Portishead Local Action Team calling for more of the lifesaving devices along the marina. In a letter to the LAT, local councillors and North Somerset director of development and environment David Turner, Mrs Souter said she was concerned at the lack of lifebuoys along the marina by the lighthouse and lock gates.Mrs Souter said: "I have recently walked along the fishing village development in Portishead and am very concerned to see that there are still no lifebuoys. The situation has been like this for at least two years and during this time I have not been able to take my children along there."I understand from the council that there are no guidelines for dockside safety."However, this area is not part of a dock which is closed off to the public and it is regularly used by people on foot."Someone must surely have to assume responsibility for providing the lifebuoys."Portishead Local Action Team chairman Geraldine Box said she was investigating why there were only one or two lifebuoys at the marina.Mrs Box said: "I have recently walked along the fishing village area and am very concerned to see that are still no lifebuoys along the dock edge."It is easy for children to climb through the railings and much of the marina is unfenced."On the dockside I could only see one lifebuoy and it would take too long for someone to run and get it if someone fell into the water."The time spent running to collect the lifebuoy could be vital and the difference between being able to save someone's life."A spokesman for docks developer Persimmon, Nigel Jones Gerrard, said: "Health and safety experts acting on behalf of Persimmon Special Projects Western have carried out a risk assessment of the marina and found the level of provision to be satisfactory. All safety equipment is checked on a monthly basis.
