Challenges facing the autism care industry were outlined to Weston MP John Penrose this week.

Mr Penrose visited Weston-based Homes Caring For Autism to hear from managing director Richard Smith, who believes new legislation which aims to provide more care within the community instead of in specialist residential institutions needs to be accelerated to ensure a better quality of life for autistic people and their families.

Conservative Mr Penrose said: “Homes Caring For Autism was recently assessed as being ‘safe, effective, well-led, responsive and caring’ by the Care Quality Commission, which means local people with autism are getting great support and care.

“Having heard their views, I will write to the Minister for Community and Social Care to find out how we can move even faster towards the new and better approach in future.”
