CAMPAIGNERS against North Somerset Council's plans to convert tennis courts into a car park have launched an online petition.

The local authority wants to turn the Grove Park courts into an extra pay-and-display parking area but its plans have to be ratified by Diocese of Bath and Wells due to a 124-year covenant it has over the site’s use.

However, a group of Weston residents unhappy about the idea have created an online petition to try to stop the tennis courts in Lower Church Road being lost.

Within 48 hours of the petition being launched at the weekend, 100 people had signed up to support it.

Various messages left by signatories include criticising the council for not embracing the Olympic legacy, taking away a site which could promote healthy living and for providing parking spaces which are not needed.
