The department is closed from 10pm to 8am each night, a move instigated in the wake of a damning inspection which ruled it was unsafe.

The hospital is trying to recruit enough doctors to make A&E safe at night, but in the meantime patients are treated elsewhere at night.

People at the events were calling on the hospital to set a target date for the emergency department to re-open fully.

Helen Thornton, of Protect Our NHS North Somerset, said: “The vigil went really well. The main purpose of it was to raise awareness.

“Weston is growing and there’s large numbers of houses being built which means there are more and more people in Weston who need a 24-hour A&E.”
