A NEW children's centre and walk-in GP service is being planned for Weston.North Somerset Primary Care Trust has its sights on the Carlton Street Car Park as the preferred site for the new Primary Care Resource Centre. The site has yet to be approved by North Somerset Council, but when built, probably by mid-2008, people will have instant access to basic medical treatment without an appointment. The centre will also bring children's services under one roof and provide new homes for cramped GP surgeries New Court Surgery and Longton Grove Surgery. The facility will serve 50,000 people primarily from Weston.A PCT spokesman said: "Carlton Street is the preferred site as it is within Central Ward, where the major health and social needs have been identified due to high levels of deprivation and lack of services. "We did consider Locking Road Car Park, but it is an awkward shape and is used for the carnival, so was not appropriate. We also considered a site by the station, but this was too small. The major alternative site was in Sunnyside Road, but it is not in Central Ward."The council is expected to consider the proposal at a meeting of the executive committee in November.North Somerset's development director David Turner said the decision to develop the car park would be sensitive and has to go through the planning procedure.
