CAFES, restaurants and catering businesses in Somerset are being urged to thoroughly check ingredient labels and accurately describe dishes.

Somerset County Council Trading Standards officers are sending out the reminder following a survey, which revealed that one in four catering premises were using vegetable oil produced from genetically modified (GM) ingredients without informing customers.

Businesses are legally required to inform customers about GM ingredients in menu descriptions.

The authority will carry out further checks in Somerset over the next few months.
