Karen Murphy, aged 56, will be joined by 21-year-old daughter Catherine to take on the Weston Athletic Club Christmas Cracker race on December 6, in aid of Weston Hospicecare.

They were inspired to raise money for the Weston-super-Mare charity as Karen is the hospice’s full-time chaplain. Catherine volunteers for the hospice as a companion sitter, which involves visiting patients at home or in the hospice who would otherwise be lonely.

Karen is aiming to complete the race in 56 minutes in honour of her age.

She said: “When I first came to work at the hospice 10 years ago, I joined some of my colleagues who were trying to get fit gradually. I built up to a half hour run, until eventually I could run for 10km.”

“I’ve done the race once before – but I’m older now.”
