A nine-year-old girl from Weston took on a challenging sponsored swim at the weekend to raise money for a Somerset wildlife rescue charity.

Charlie Neale swam 2,000 metres at Hutton Moor Leisure Centre on Saturday to raise money for Secret World Wildlife Rescue, in East Huntspill.

The distance is twice as far as she had ever swum before, but she wanted to take on the challenge after attending open days at Secret World.

Charlie’s father Matt said his daughter wants to volunteer at Secret World when she is older.

He said: “Charlie is an avid swimmer. She has lessons every week at Hutton Moor and has passed her grade eight (swimming test).

“She has a keen interest in animal welfare and goes to almost every open weekend that is held at Secret World. She’s also keen to help out in any way she can – she’d be on site now I’m sure, if she was old enough.”
