CHILDREN, pregnant teenagers and families could soon have a new place to go if a £410,000 children's centre is given the go ahead in Burnham. Somerset County Council has submitted a planning application to Sedgemoor District Council for the new project. The scheme is one of about half a dozen the county council plans to put in for child care and family support centres in Somerset. A spokesman for the county council said: "If planning permission is granted, the children's centre will provide family support and give advice on issues such as teenage pregnancy, children's healthcare, and relationship counselling for parents and children."There will also be a classroom for Burnham Pre-school to use as it is currently using a temporary classroom in the infant school. "It will be a great centre for children, parents and teenagers in the Burnham area. Before submitting the application we did consult with members of the community and schools in the area and the general feeling was it would be a real benefit. "If all goes well we will be on site by June or July. If there are objections we would obviously want to pursue the matter and take it to a regulations board."The single storey centre with parking facilities would be built at Burnham Community Infants School in Winchester Road. Town centre manager Ann-Marie Spalding said: "I think any sort of plans to improve and widen family support is a positive thing for the town. "The town is expanding all the time and new residents are always moving in. The centre would be a real boost for Burnham.
