A Weston-super-Mare church has moved a stage closer to its ambition to build a new hub for the community, after it raised more than £188,000 in just one day.

Fundraising is underway so a £5.5million extension could be built at St Paul’s Church, in Walliscote Road.

Church leaders hope to create a café, a youth area, a space for children to play in and meeting rooms.

The Reverend Andrew Alden said: “It will be called The Quay, and it will provide better facilities for the whole community.

“It is an incredible design, and we are starting to raise money for it now.

“The congregation has been hugely generous and raised £170,000 in a day, which will go towards creating a detailed design.

“We also really hope the community gets involved.”

Mr Alden is also in talks with the Diocese of Bath and Wells in the hope of securing a larger grant for the project.

A ‘big build’ breakfast will be held at the church on January 28 from 9.30-11.30am to support the fundraising efforts.

Entry is £5 for adults, or £3 for students and children.
