A POPULAR Weston church is fund-raising to build a £10million glass community centre in the heart of Weston.Members of Holy Trinity Church in South Road have already started raising money for the Light House, which they hope to build in the next five to seven years. The centre would house a 1,000 seat auditorium, shopping facilities, a skate park, youth and children's facilities such as a soft play area and climbing walls, restaurants and an IT centre. The project has been launched because the church, which runs various groups such as the D:Code:D youth project, one:80 group for skateboarders and Smile Kids Club, has outgrown its current building.Ten years ago the church had 12 people in its congregation. Its membership now stands at 250 adults, 350 young people and 365 children.A site has not yet been chosen for the new centre.Church youth leader Richard Ellerington said: "The church has grown to such an extent not everyone can fit in the building at any one time. Our base doesn't really cater for the numbers of projects we run. "Years ago the church used to be the centre of a community and were built in the middle of towns and villages."We are going back to that concept. The centre will provide for the whole community and while people are there they have the opportunity to talk to us about religion. Because it will be several years before the centre is finished we are looking at other buildings in the interim as stepping stones to provide us with more space."We are very proud that while many churches are closing around the country, we are continually growing.
