THOUSANDS of pounds are needed to fund repairs to a church roof. St Andrew's Church in Cheddar needs £10,000 for new fittings in the church tower, as rain has started to leak onto the bells. The bells cost £50,000 and were only installed a few years ago. Reverend Victor Daly said: "Everyone walks past and hears the bells and people use the church for weddings and funerals, so it would be nice to get some of the residents to chip in."The Friends of St Andrew's has been wonderful at raising funds and is currently planning some events for next year."The repairs will cost £30,000 and we already have £20,000."The lead roofing on the 20ft by 20ft tower needs replacing and scaffolding will need to be put up while work is going on. Specialist architects from Wells will be called in to carry out the work on the 15th century tower. The church, which dates back to 1380, boasts a traditional Somerset tower. The only other nearest example is the tower at St Andrew's Church in Banwell.
