PLANS are being hatched to build a new school in a Somerset village and turn the old one into a community centre.Axbridge First School in Moorland Street, Axbridge, is nearly full and, with several new housing developments in the town, talks have begun to increase the school's capacity. The idea of building a new, larger school follows talks between Mayor Barry Hamblin, headteacher Gillian Briggs and town, district and county councillors.Sedgemoor District Council is to recommend possible site locations and school governors are to hold a special meeting on the plan at their next meeting in September.Councillor Hamblin said: "There are about 13 new developments around the town coming up all of a size attractive to new families."The parish plan has revealed a huge demand for community and arts centre. The building currently as a school would be absolutely spot-on for it."The youth centre is run late at night and there isn't a good footpath there. You can't drive there and there's no parking and it's outside the centre of the town."Gillian Briggs is very enthusiastic and would love to see a new school built. The governors want a full meeting to consider the implications.
