A VITAL village shop is still months away from reopening, as it is still too unsafe for staff to enter.

The Co-Operative Society shop in Winscombe was gutted by fire in April, and has been shut ever since.

Speaking at the Winscombe and Sandford annual parish assembly on May 26, the company’s operations manager George Smith said the Health and Safety Executive had not allowed his staff back into the store as it was still structurally unsound.

He said: “It will take eight to 12 weeks from when we can get in to try and fix it, but at the moment we can’t get in, it’s currently out of my hands.”

He also added that a bus service was taking customers from Winscombe to the Co-Operative stores in Yatton while the store remained shut.

It runs every Tuesday and Friday at 10am, from the bus stop by the Royal British Legion in Sandford Road.
