WELL-KNOWN comedians such as Rhod Gilbert and Richard Herring could soon be treading the boards at Weston's Blakehay Theatre.

The town council-run attraction is set to start a four month trial with Bristol-based event organisers Comedy Box, with the authority hopeful top acts will perform at the Wadham Street theatre from next February onwards.

The deal will see Weston Town Council and the theatre receive 20 per cent of money raised through the shows, and the trial’s success will be evaluated at the end of the four months with a view to agreeing a long-term contract.

The nights will take place on one Thursday a month, and will feature three or four comedians who will also be appearing at Comedy Box’s three Bristol venues.

Among those appearing at Comedy Box over the next few months are regular TV comedians such as Gilbert, Herring and Mark Thomas, and council bosses say they are hopeful that acts of their calibre will be performing in Weston from next spring.

Town clerk Malcolm Nicholson said: “We are very optimistic that regular comedy nights in Weston will prove to be a success and will prove to be a hit with residents.”

The town council is also set to enter into an agreement with The Playhouse Theatre which would see performances and promotion shared between the two theatres.

That agreement is set to last for the next six months on a trial basis.
